I received a complimentary pass for seven days, and I was extremely eager as I had previously visited the Nuffield in Abridge. I belong to a budget gym and was contemplating upgrading from my £20 monthly fee for something more upscale. Upon arrival, the staff were not very welcoming; I anticipated a hard sell or at least a brief tour to familiarise me with the facilities. None of that occurred! The swimming pool seemed to be predominantly reserved for swimming lessons, leaving a minuscule lane for members to utilise. Upon heading upstairs, I was genuinely taken aback by the diminutive and unclean gym. The dearth of equipment was shocking; how they justify charging over £80 per month is beyond me. Kudos to them for managing to attract any members at that price! I wouldn't return even if they paid me £80 a month.
I held a membership for a period, but the amenities failed to meet expectations, especially given the cost of membership and the frequent price hikes. The steam room was frequently out of order or unclean. I once observed someone had stuck their gum on the walls in there. There was a gap in the ceiling above the showers for some time, and the changing rooms felt rather unhygienic. The monthly fees imply luxury, but regrettably, it's far from that. Parking is a nightmare. The gym upstairs exhibits black mould on the walls near the cross-training machines. However, I did appreciate that during my evening swims, the pool was relatively empty. The staff are also exceptionally helpful and amiable.
Splendid locale, but a disappointment for those who enjoy swimming, as it appears they fill each day with family swims and children's lessons. This wasn't the scenario in past times. You're left with just one narrow lane amidst a crowd. That's precisely why I opted for a private gym over a publicly managed one - for better pool access. Everything else is satisfactory, but it's simply overwhelming. The only serene times are well before the workday begins and well after it ends.
